Shoppin’ in the rain

December 18th, 2010

Spent some time today shopping. In the rain. My mom got a ride down from Atascadero to my place. We rode the bus together to the other end of town. The rainy season has arrived here on the central coast. It’s been raining since late Thursday night. I know I complain a lot about our lack of rain. I guess the atmosphere reads my blog.

Stormy Sunday

October 18th, 2010

Yesterday morning, I was walking out to the laundry hut when I spotted this interesting break in the clouds:

SLO town, soggy town

October 7th, 2010

Despite the non-events of earlier this week, we finally got some rain here on the central coast. Yesterday afternoon, I headed downtown to have some lunch and enjoy the cool, rainy air. Here’s a few pictures.

Storm chasing – SLO style

October 3rd, 2010

The atmospheric remnants of heat wave 2010 gave rise to the possibility of actual weather here on the central coast. Forecasts over the last few days have been calling for rain and/or thunderstorms. I’ve lived here long enough to know that these predictions don’t always come true. Regardless, I was surprised to wake up to the sound of light rain on Friday morning. Later that day, this promising-looking cloud front passed to the east.

But nothing really came of it.

Rainy day

October 14th, 2009

As promised, the rain has arrived. It began to fall early Tuesday morning and is still coming down as I’m typing this on Wednesday. I ventured out into it to see if there was anything worth documenting. I took some photos and compiled a short video.

Before the rain

October 12th, 2009

It’s fall here in the central coast area of California. And the rain is on its way. But unlike the rolling storms I grew up with in the midwest, a California rain takes its time to arrive. Today, the skies are filled with a variety of clouds, a precursor of what’s to come. During my afternoon walk, I snapped some photos with my iPhone.

A little rain this time, but…

June 6th, 2009

Woke up yesterday to the sound of rainfall outside the window. The rain that never happened last week had finally arrived. Forecasts were calling for continued chances of rain throughout the weekend, with maybe even a thunderstorm thrown in for good measure. I was excited at the prospect of a storm, and later in the day, it looked like mother nature might’ve delivered. I took a walk to Subway, and on the way, saw these cloud formations in the sky:

The air had a nice mixture of coolness and humidity, similar to how it feels right before a nice cloudburst. But, nothing. The clouds blew over after a bit, and it was back to clear skies. So much for that.

No rain

June 1st, 2009

I’ve blogged before about thundestorms. We don’t get many of them here in central California, and I do miss them. I was walking back from the laundry hut last Thursday afternoon when I noticed some dark clouds to the east, and what sounded like thunder. It was a surprise, as I hadn’t seen any rain or storms in the weather forecast. I checked a local weather radar site, and it showed a large storm cell out to the east that was tracking toward San Luis Obispo.

Photo Frednesday

December 17th, 2008

It’s been rainy here over the last few days. I was out doing some shopping yesterday. I walked out of the local Circuit City and saw these clouds up in the sky:

These kinds of cloud formations aren’t very common around here.

Later in the day, I spotted this rainbow hanging over Madonna Plaza:

What you can’t see in the above photo is the Staples store sitting behind the trees. Kinda funny that the rainbow sorta leads there. I found something there that I couldn’t find at either Circuity City or Best Buy. (See more cloud photos here.)

During yesterday’s excursion, I also stopped into the local Linens N’ Things. The entire Linens N’ Things chain is in the process of going out of business. The store is down to its final days, and it’s looking rather empty inside:

Funny that Circuit City is also going out of business, but the store doesn’t look like it. Guess the local branch isn’t in fire-sale mode yet.

Rain

November 4th, 2008

Rain can be a rare thing here in central California. Even during the rainy season, precipitation may occur less frequently than we would like. However, we’ve been getting some rain pretty regularly for the last few days. I decided to take the iRiver and the Giant Squid onto the porch and record some ambient rainfall sounds. You’ll hear a screen door slam, some car noises and lots of raindrops. Enjoy. (The battery died on the iRiver before I came back inside, so that’s why the recording fades out.)

This is my fourth podcast for NaPodPoMo 2008.
