The first weekend of 2011

January 3rd, 2011

The first weekend of 2011 has come and gone. It was a good weekend, though things got a little weird at the end.

We had fun Friday evening recording GeminiDragon 18. We were joined by some friends for the live show as we discussed our predictions for 2011 and covered some amusing year-end lists.

Food review: Muzio’s Grocery & Deli

August 2nd, 2010

Jen and I had lunch today at Muzio’s Grocery & Deli in downtown San Luis Obispo. This is the first time we’ve been to Muzio’s, and it didn’t even dawn on me until after we got home that the business we visited had recently moved. Muzio’s used to be on Monterey Street, but it is now located in the new Wineman building on Higuera Street. (We mistakenly believed it to be a brand new business.)

Muzio’s has a kind of rustic decor, with comfortable seating inside, as well as some patio dining tables out front. The deli lists its sandwich offerings on a series of blackboards behind the counter.

More barnyard animals

August 1st, 2010

On Friday, Jen and I bused up to the North County for the 2010 California Mid State Fair. We mostly walked around and looked at the different exhibits that were on display.

These bears greet you at the main entrance to the fairgrounds.

airplanecake
The first building we walked through was a craft building that included handmade stuff as well as baked goods. I think this cake is pretty cool.

This one is pretty cool, too.

Beef noodle soup recipe

June 19th, 2010

Earlier this week, I made a pot of beef noodle soup. It turned out pretty good. Here’s the recipe:

1/2 pound lean ground beef
beef broth (7 cups, substitute part water is OK)
chopped onions (approx. 1 cup)
chopped celery (approx. 1 cup
chopped carrots (approx. 1 cup)
can cream of celery soup
1 1/4 cups noodle pasta (rotini, egg noodles, etc.)
salt/pepper/seasonings

Directions: Brown ground beef and onions in soup pot. Drain. Add beef broth, celery, carrots and seasonings (I used some sea salt, ground black pepper, chili powder, garlic salt and oregano). Heat until boiling, stir occasionally. Continue to boil about 20 minutes. Keep an eye on the overall broth level. You’ll want it to go down some, but don’t let it get too low. Finally, add pasta and cook per package instructions. Once the pasta has cooked to your liking. remove soup from heat. Ladle into bowl(s), serve. Makes about six servings. Also, if my calculations are correct, a bowl of this soup is about 250 calories.
