Today is Record Store Day, a kind of quasi-celebration of independently owned music shops. Record Store Day is just one attempt in a growing list of ideas to try and Save The Music Industry. As a member of the dwindling minority of consumers who not only pay for music but actually enjoy owing it in physical formats, I don’t really need an official day to go to a record store. Regardless, Jen and I ventured out to a local music shop to participate in the festivities.

At the front of the store, we found a selection of free CD samplers issued by a bunch of different record labels. Many of the samplers carried special Record Store Day branding.

I came in with a small list of albums I’m looking to acquire. I looked for a couple, but couldn’t find ‘em. One, I suspect, was sold out, and the other is probably out of print. Though, had I bothered to ask the Cheap Thrills staff, I’m sure they would’ve taken the time to help me get the discs. Regardless, I wound up purchasing the new Morrissey album, and I’m looking forward to listening to it.

I recently learned that Cheap Thrills hosts free concerts in a building right next to the store, and today they put on a special double bill in honor of Record Store Day.

We walked over to find that the first band, Bad Assets, was still getting set up. We then went to a nearby coffee shop so Jen could get something to drink, and walked back. When we returned, we found the band tearing through its set.

We hung around until they finished up, and then decided to go grab some lunch during the load out/load in between sets. We came back to find Carnies annihilating everyone’s ear drums.

We hung around ’til the end of Carnies’ set and decided to call it a day. Oh, and jen also got this cool button from Cheap Thrills:

(A few more photos can be found here.)
