OK, this post has very little to do with the meaning of life. Or, maybe it does…

I’ve been giving a lot of consideration lately to converting my music collection to digital audio. Then, selling off the physical media, and only buying physical product in the future when there are no downloadable options available. This was spurred on by a few different things. First, I’ve realized that I spend most of my time listening to music either sitting at the computer, or via my iPhone. When I get a new CD, I rip it into iTunes, and then deposit the disc onto the CD rack in the hallway. Sometimes, a disc will make its way into the bedroom stereo. But these occasions are rare at best. The second reason is that storage of physical media is cumbersome. That CD rack I mentioned above is almost full. And once it hits maximum capacity, there aren’t many options left for growth. We just don’t have the space.

Obviously, there are positive and negative aspects to doing this. And balancing these aspects is what it all comes down to. Let’s take a look at the positives first:
1.) Ease of maintenance/storage/organization: It’s much easier to dust a hard drive than it is to keep hundreds (thousands, collectively?) of CD’s, records and tapes clean. And that hard drive takes up much less space. Also, organizing an iTunes library is fairly simple, as long as all of its contents are properly tagged. I like to keep things orderly. It takes time to keep a large physical media collection organized. Even if you stay on top of it. there’s always things that’ll have to be moved around when a new title is added.
2.) Economics: This one is debatable. But based on what I’ve seen, CD’s still typically retail for around $13.00. Usually, those same albums can be purchased digitally for around $10.00. Also, digital stores often let users cherry pick individual tracks. In cases where I know I’m only going to really like a couple of tracks from an album, I could purchase only those songs and save even more money.

On to the negatives:
1.) Backup/Archiving: Physical media is really the ultimate archive. You’ve got the music (in a full-quality, uncompressed state), artwork and other odds/ends right there. When everything lives on a disk, you run the risk of total loss if the disk goes bad. An all-encompassing iTunes library would have to be backed up regularly. This has been made easier through services like Apple’s Time Machine. But the old rule of backing up data is that, until there are three copies, it doesn’t really exist. Also, in many cases digital albums/singles won’t give you access to all of the artwork/information contained in a CD booklet. This will likely change as more and more product goes all digital. But for now, to someone with a completist mentality (like me!) there’s really no way to digitally have it all.
2.) Emotional/coolness factor: There’s a lot of emotions tied to my music collection. Some good, some bad. I started heavily collecting music as a teenager. Back then, I was highly obsessed. I bought a lot of records at garage sales and thrift stores because they were cheap. And while I definitely loved the music, I was also simply feeding the obsession. At the time, I imagined that one day, I’d have the space to properly store and manage a wide range of media. Sadly, that day never arrived and it’s not likely to. Through the years, I have weeded through my collection, removing things I was certain I would no longer listen to. And this has helped some in terms of maintenance. And while I don’t commune with my music collection like I might have a decade ago, I still get certain feelings of joy when I do flip through it and find something I really like that I haven’t heard in ages. While iTunes shuffle can replicate this to an extent, it’s just not the same.

I really started considering the move to digital after reading this piece by the great Maura Johnston. She relates the emotional side of this equation better than I could ever hope to. Regardless, if she was able to make the switch, it gives me some confidence to think that I could eventually do the same.

New iPhone 4 on the right, in comparison with the old iPhone 3G on the left.

I also bought a Griffin iTrip, which came in pretty hand during last week’s Solvang trip.

I had been holding off on the upgrade for awhile. But when Apple announced its free iPhone 4 case program, and I realized I could sell my old phone as a method to cover most of the expense of a new one, it seemed like the right time to make the jump. (I chose this case, by the way.)

A cool feature of the new iPhone is its ability to capture HD video. I had considered purchasing a pocket HD camcorder earlier this year, but I no longer have any reason to do that. (The videos I linked to in the Solvang post from last week were taken with the iPhone 4.)

Will post some videos, as well as any other cool iPhone-related stuff, in the future. (More photos are available here.)

A couple days ago, I wrote about my new computer monitor. At the time, I was discouraged with the new monitor, and I was struggling to get used to using it. Since then, I’ve done a lot of experimenting with different resolution settings and I’ve also tried out some programs designed for low-vision users (like me). And so far, I’d say my experience is improving. Right now, I’m using a feature built into OS X called Zoom. I’m zoomed in at a level of 1.7x, and I can see things well. There’s a trade-off, though. Since Zoom magnifies an area of the computer’s screen, I can’t have my entire work environment on screen at one time. I feel like it’s slowing down my productivity a bit. This may change over time, as I get more accustomed to using this setup. What I’d really like is some way to magnify text in just certain areas. For example, Firefox has a text zoom function. But it applies the same zoom factor to all text on a webpage. So if I’m looking at my GooglesReader, and I want to enlarge the text in the reader section only, I can’t. I have to enlarge the reader section, the headlines, the sidebars. Everything. In turn, this causes the reader section to “shrink” to the point where it can’t really display any content at all. Also, every time I open a new tab, I have to zoom the text again, as the zoom setting doesn’t carry over from one tab to another. I haven’t researched yet to see if there’s some kind of universal setting that could be applied to all text in Firefox. But even if there was, I’m still not sure it’s a good solution. So for now, I’ll keep going with the OS X Zoom feature and see how that goes. I’m also planning on installing a track light in this room, which should help to balance out the ambient light around me, and that’ll be easier on my eyes.

On a related note, I really am enjoying some of the benefits of this new monitor. Specifically, photos and videos are much clearer. And since they’re bigger, I can really see them. It’s given me a whole new sense of appreciation for these visual mediums, and that’s good.

So, I’m going to keep using the monitor through the rest of the weekend. And after using it for a few more days, I should be able to tell whether or not it’ll be worth keeping.

Last week, I ordered a new 25″ computer monitor. Today, the monitor arrived. I’ve spent most of the night setting it up, trying to get acclimated to it. My old monitor was only 19″. That’s a full half-foot smaller than this monitor. Also, my old monitor is the traditional 4:3 aspect ratio, whereas the new one is 16:9. Overall, I have to admit that I’m a bit underwhelmed. I was hoping that this new monitor would really improve my experience with the computer. But the gains I’ve experienced so far have been minimal at best. I’m not sure why.

I’m legally blind. The best way I’ve found to work with a computer is to get up close to the monitor. Like, within an inch or two. Mercifully, monitor sizes have increased steadily over the years. My first “modern” computer, a Pentium 75 purchased in 1996, came with a 15″ monitor. In 1999, I moved up to a 19″ monitor when I bought my first Mac. And 19″ is where it’s stayed until now. There were a few reasons that spurred the upgrade. I won’t cover all of them here. But the main factor was that many websites and applications wouldn’t display properly on my old 19″ monitor. I had to set that screen’s resolution to 800×600 in order to really see anything. None of Apple’s iLife applications (except maybe for iTunes) will work at 800×600. Nor will any of Apple’s pro applications (like Logic Pro). I use these programs a lot. It’s been discouraging to have to switch resolutions just to run these apps. Not to mention that the higher res factors made it harder for me to see what was on my screen. As I type this, I’ve got the new monitor set to 1024×576, the lowest resolution available that takes full advantage of this monitor’s aspect ratio. And while I am able to sit a bit further back from this monitor than I could with the old one, iPhoto and Garageband (a couple of those pesky iLife app’s) won’t display properly without increasing the resolution. And I haven’t been able to make up my mind yet as to whether or not there’s any improvement while just reading text on the web. It’s discouraging because I was really hoping for a choir-of-angels kinda thing to happen when I fired up the new monitor. That didn’t happen.

Still, it’s got potential. I just need to spend some more time tweaking it to my liking. For now, I need to get away from the computer. All of this experimentation with the monitor has really fried my eyeballs out.

The new monitor, in all of its 25″ glory.

I think we’ve finally got that sewer gas problem under control. After moving some stuff around, I discovered this open drain pipe, hiding in the hallway:

We went to the hardware store later that day and picked up another Qwik Cap. Now the pipe is capped and so far, so good:

I seem to have come through my respiratory infection. Haven’t completely recovered, but feeling much better. Unfortunately, Jen’s come down with similar symptoms and she’s pretty sick. Guess that was inevitable. She’s holding off for now, but she may go and see a doctor if things don’t improve soon. We were invited to a party tonight but we had to cancel, which is disappointing. But, she’s in no shape to go anywhere right now. We spent the day at home. Watching TV and playing Viva Pinata.

Later in the evening, I dragged out all of my guitar gear and hooked it up. Took awhile to get started. My Line6 PODXT Live effects processor needed some software updates, as did some of the computer software that I use along with the PODXT. I was discouraged to learn that most of the Line6 software I had used in the past doesn’t work under Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard). This is more Apple’s fault than Line6′s fault. Apparently, Snow Leopard doesn’t support the version of Java that Line6 has used in most of its applications. Even after running the latest updates from Line6, most of the stuff still didn’t work. I’m going to try and install the software on my Dell tower instead, and see if it’ll still run under WindowsXP. To clarify, these programs aren’t necessary to use the PODXT. But they make the patch editing process easier, especially if you don’t see so well (like me) as everything can be displayed on a computer monitor instead of the PODXT’s little built-in display. Anyway, I was able to at least use one piece of Line6 software, and I had fun playing guitar for awhile. I made a nice-sounding patch, and I recorded an AudioBoo where you can hear it:
Listen!
I’m looking forward to spending more time playing guitar and exploring this Line6 technology. Lots of possibilities there.

We spent the New Year’s weekend moving things around. The plan was to take the stuff in the back room, and swap it with the stuff in the front room. I had the idea to do this last November, because I thought it’d be good to move the studio into its own space, and to make our living area a little more open and comfortable. We’ve been living with this new configuration now for about a month, and we like it.

I took a lot of photos. The deconstruction/reconstruction of the front room went something like this:

We moved the couch out of the back room a few days before the Big Move began.

My desk, as it was being taken apart.

The dining room table and benches had to be taken apart and reassembled. They’re put together better now.

I had to assemble the new TV stand. The next day, we moved the aquarium and our new TV was delivered.

I just took this picture tonight. (Yes, the TV has a cover.)

Now the back room.

After we moved the couch out of the room, Jen took a couple hours over the span of a few days to clean the floor. It was pretty bad.

We’re planning on eventually turning this closet into a vocal/isolation booth.

I was walking somewhere this morning. As I crossed over what I thought was a clear corner between a parking lot and a sidewalk, something grabbed my right foot. I went down on to the concrete. It wasn’t a particularly hard fall, and I had managed to shift my weight on to my left side, which somehow helped to disperse the impact’s energy. And in that hurried moment just after the fall, as I was laying there on the wet ground (we’ve been having some actual weather this week), I watched in slow motion as my iPhone tumbled through the air, landing on its back, right next to me. I mentioned above that I had managed to fall on my left side. And I almost always carry my iPhone in my left coat pocket, and I almost always keep that pocket zippered up. But for some reason, this morning, I hadn’t zipped the pocket closed. A couple guys nearby, who witnessed the fall, asked if I was OK.

“Yeah,” I said. “I’m fine. But my phone’s not.” I could see that the iPhone had been damaged. I picked it up to get a closer look. Here’s what I saw:

I put the iPhone back into my coat pocket, remembering to zip the pocket closed this time. I got back up on my feet and tried to piece together just what had happened. Apparently, that corner between the parking lot and the sidewalk that I had carelessly stepped over was bordered with just-taller-than-ankle-high landscaping fences. A combination of me being legally blind, the relatively low light caused by overcast skies, along with the fact that I was wearing sunglasses (it was still bright enough out that I needed them) kept me from noticing that those little fences were there. I was wearing headphones that were attached to the iPhone. I’m pretty sure that, as I fell down, the iPhone slid out of my pocket, and the momentum of my body falling forward swung the phone up in to the air by the headphone cables. It’s doubtful that the phone would’ve come through the fall unscathed even if I wasn’t wearing headphones. And I realized later that, as I fell on to my left side, it’s still possible the phone might’ve been damaged even if I had properly closed my coat pocket, as I might’ve fallen on to it. Regardless, the damage was done. I played around with the phone for a bit after that to see if it was still operable. And it is. It actually works just fine. But even though it’s still technically functional, it’s not very usable. Later in the day, I went to the San Luis Obispo Apple Store. After waiting around for a bit, I had a short consultation with a dude from the Genius Bar. He said that they could fix the broken phone right there at the store for $199.00. They could just pop the broken glass off and replace it, good as new. I told him, at that price, I’d have to give it some thought and come back later. He then also told me that, while they don’t recommend it, you can usually find places online that’ll perform the same procedure for less money. I actually already knew that. While I was waiting for my Genius time, I used one of the many in-store Macs to do some research. I found the website of a company called uBreakiFix. This company offers the same repair for $79.99. That’s close to a third of Apple’s price. Later in the evening, after I had returned home, I looked around to see if there was any serious dirt on uBreakiFix, and I didn’t find anything negative. The company looks to be a legitimate operation. I’ve already ordered the repair service and I’ll be shipping my iPhone to them the beginning of next week. It’ll suck to be without the phone for a few days. Obviously, if I had just paid Apple’s price, I’d already have the phone repaired. But the inconvenience is worth the money that I’ll save. And as soon as I get the phone back, I’ll definitely be purchasing a protective case. It’s one of those things that’s been on my mind for awhile. But, I just never got ’round to doing it.
