Halloween 2010

October 31st, 2010

Last night, we went out for some Halloween goodness. We started the evening at The Kilt Pub here in San Luis Obispo. We arrived kinda early, and there weren’t many others yet dressed in costumes. Still, we wore ours with pride while we enjoyed a meal and some drinks.

Health care and freedom

October 22nd, 2010

After nearly 1.5 weeks of constant pain in my left arm (and some helpful prodding from friends on Facebook), I went to a doctor today to get things checked out. The arm problem turned out to be nothing more than an injured muscle. I was relieved to know that I wasn’t having a grabber. Still, I put going to the doctor off as long as possible. I have no health insurance, and in the time between making the doctor’s appointment and getting the grabber-free diagnosis, I imagined I’d get sucked into a spiral of tests and exams that’d cause the dollar signs to quickly pile up. I got lucky. The total cost for the office visit was $97.00. Sure, my bank balance is looking pretty sad right now. But it won’t look that way forever. However, had I needed anything beyond just the office visit, the situation would likely be much worse.

Pain drunk

October 20th, 2010

I hurt my left arm. Not entirely sure what happened. But I think it was caused by having to carry our new microwave in its big, bulky box across the Madonna Plaza parking lot. I noticed that pulled-muscle feeling in the upper arm area a few days after. And it’s been relentless ever since.

Time for listening

October 16th, 2010

Mike sent me a record.

It was something that he had picked up at the mall and apparently didn’t like. This may actually be the first time someone’s gifted me with some new music specifically because they didn’t like it. Regardless, the gesture is appreciated.

It’s not a toaster

October 11th, 2010

As I had mentioned at the end of the last post, Jen and I did indeed go out on Saturday to buy a microwave. We visited four different shops, and wound up purchasing a stainless steel model made by Oster.

We chose this one based on size and price considerations. Also, it’s stainless steel, and that’s kinda cool.

We’ve estimated that our previous microwave is somewhere between ten and twelve years old. Considering the layer of crust that’s accumulated on its roof, and the fact that the plastic runners under the platter had completely worn away the finish underneath, it seemed like a good time to retire the old nuke box. I’m going to try and find a place that’ll recycle it. Hopefully, that can be done.

The new microwave cooks faster than the old one, which is nice. It’ll take some time to get used to. I pretty much had cooking with the old ‘wave down to a science. But that’s a good problem to have.

Oh, life (insurance)

October 9th, 2010

Yesterday morning, Jen and I jumped through the final hoop in our ongoing quest for life insurance. A nurse who was hired by the insurance company came to our home and performed basic physical exams on both of us. (These “exams” included blood pressure and weight measurements, blood and urine sample collections, some questions about prescription-drug use and a few more questions about our personal histories with tobacco/nicotine. This last part is apparently really important, as there were some very specific questions there.) The exams themselves weren’t bad and the nurse gave us the impression that we were good, prepared patients. Now we wait for the insurance company’s final decision as to whether or not we’re insurable.

If we’re accepted, we’ll (obviously) have the life insurance. Of course, we’ll still be without health insurance. It’s absurd and kinda hilarious that getting life insurance is typically so much easier than getting health insurance. There are many reasons for why this is. And for us, it mostly comes down to finances. Regardless, this condition really says something about the state of modern American existence. Yeah, sure. We can help out your family with a payout after you’re dead. But screw you while you’re alive HA HA!

SLO town, soggy town

October 7th, 2010

Despite the non-events of earlier this week, we finally got some rain here on the central coast. Yesterday afternoon, I headed downtown to have some lunch and enjoy the cool, rainy air. Here’s a few pictures.

Storm chasing – SLO style

October 3rd, 2010

The atmospheric remnants of heat wave 2010 gave rise to the possibility of actual weather here on the central coast. Forecasts over the last few days have been calling for rain and/or thunderstorms. I’ve lived here long enough to know that these predictions don’t always come true. Regardless, I was surprised to wake up to the sound of light rain on Friday morning. Later that day, this promising-looking cloud front passed to the east.

But nothing really came of it.
