Heat wave 2010

September 29th, 2010

California has experienced some record-high temperatures over the last week. Even here, on the central coast, where the climate is fairly mild all year round, we saw some high numbers on the thermometer.

The Shamblers reunion at Frog & Peach

September 26th, 2010

Last Thursday night, we attended a concert at Frog & Peach. Formerly local band The Shamblers reunited its original lineup for a special show. It was the first time the original band members had played together in two years. The Wedding Industrial Complex, who also hadn’t played together since the last Shamblers show, rocked the opening slot.

2010 i Madonnari Festival

September 19th, 2010

Last weekend, Jen and I checked out the 2010 i Madonnari Festival in downtown San Luis Obispo. The festival features works of art, drawn with chalk on concrete or pavement. Some of these works are impressive. Most are somewhat difficult to photograph. But I took some pictures, anyway.

2010 Paso Robles Airport Day

September 12th, 2010

Yesterday we attended the 2010 Paso Robles Airport Day. The event was billed as an air show, though it was really more of a fly-in. Still, there were some cool aircraft on display.

Music, media and the meaning of life

September 9th, 2010

OK, this post has very little to do with the meaning of life. Or, maybe it does…

I’ve been giving a lot of consideration lately to converting my music collection to digital audio. Then, selling off the physical media, and only buying physical product in the future when there are no downloadable options available. This was spurred on by a few different things. First, I’ve realized that I spend most of my time listening to music either sitting at the computer, or via my iPhone. When I get a new CD, I rip it into iTunes, and then deposit the disc onto the CD rack in the hallway. Sometimes, a disc will make its way into the bedroom stereo. But these occasions are rare at best. The second reason is that storage of physical media is cumbersome. That CD rack I mentioned above is almost full. And once it hits maximum capacity, there aren’t many options left for growth. We just don’t have the space.

Labor Day drive

September 6th, 2010

Jen and I drove downtown. Then, we walked around to find some lunch and also to see which businesses took the holiday off.

LOLZ, magazines

September 1st, 2010

In the late 90′s, I lived within walking distance of a Borders store. It was the first time in my life that I’d had easy access to that kind of place. I enjoyed regular trips to the store’s cafe, where I’d usually order a vanilla Coke and then spend some time browsing the nearby magazine racks. I’d start with the music magazines, reading anything that looked interesting. Then, I’d move on to the technology mags (usually the Mac-centric ones), if I was still in the mood to read. I’ve often wondered if this type of behavior is exactly what these stores had in mind when they all opened in-store cafes. It’s likely that Borders made more pure profit from my purchase of vanilla Cokes than it would have if I had just bought all of the magazines I happily read for free. And while that’s great for Borders, it’s not so good for the magazine companies. Even so, lots of people were still buying magazines, so maybe it didn’t matter if some of us were using our local bookstores as libraries. Or, maybe not.
