Yesterday was Jen’s birthday. As part of the day’s festivities, she wanted to have dinner at Corner View Restaurant, specifically because she wanted to try the scallops. We discovered earlier this year that the restaurant only serves scallops during its dinner service, so we headed to the place, located in the heart of downtown San Luis, in the late afternoon.
We arrived and were seated immediately at a window-side table. (One of the cool things about Corner View’s location is that it affords diners nice views of Marsh, Chorro Streets and the city beyond.) Our server took our drink orders (we both had iced tea) and left us to peruse our menus. Jen already had her order planned out. But it took me a few minutes to make a decision. I was in a mood for something new, so I skipped over some usual choices (fish and chips, burgers) for the chicken scallopini with lemon pepper sauce. The menu indicated that the chicken is served with sauteed vegetables and the ubiquitous “potato of the day.” Normally, I would’ve asked what the day’s potato would’ve been (and probably asked if I could’ve substituted it for french fries), but like I typed above, I was in the mood for something new. So, I rolled with it. Potatoes be damned.
After taking our order, the server brought us some warm bread with butter, which made for a nice appetizer. (We didn’t order an appetizer from the menu.) A short time after that, she returned with our entrees.

Jen’s scallops with rice pilaf and sauteed vegetables.

My chicken scallopini with sauteed vegetables and potatoes au gratin.
Jen’s scallops came with rice pilaf and sauteed vegetables. My chicken also came with sauteed vegetables, and it turned out that yesterday’s potatoes of the day were au gratin style. Overall, I really enjoyed this meal. The chicken was tender and the lemon-pepper sauce wasn’t overpowering. The sauteed vegetables were fresh and crisp, and the potatoes were cheesy, but not overly so. I would definitely have this dish again. It was a nice change from the usual stuff that I order out, and it was also a perfect amount of food. We finished our meal and decided to skip on dessert as we had both had enough to eat (and we already had birthday cake at home). Jen said that she really liked the scallops, rice and vegetables. (Maybe she’ll chime in with her own observations in the comments section.)
Before I end the review, I will mention that the tab for this meal was a little on the pricey side. After tip, we spent almost $70.00. I’m not complaining about that. I feel that the experience was worth the price. I guess I’m just saying that, for us, meals at Corner View will be saved for special occasions. So, maybe we’ll go back again for Jen’s next birthday.

Seventy dollars???!!!
How many bottles of wine did you drink? Eleven???
This is a neighborhood restaurant, right? I’m thinking maybe half that price.
Looks like a nice dinner, though.
Happy birthday, Jen!

Richard & I have dined at this restaurant several times & are always happy. The food is a bit pricey but worth it. The full bar has some great drinks, especially the big martinis. Next time, give us a call.

I’m starting to wonder if we might’ve been overcharged. Too late to check the bill now…

Shawn,
As I said, I’ve eaten at the Corner view many times & it’s a bit pricey. But after checking the link with the menu & looking at what you had it is very possible there was a mistake in your bill (it does happen, unintentionally). If you still have the receipt you should check it asap. Did you use a credit card? If so you can get a copy of the receipt. OR… is it possible that the prices have changed from what is stated online? You should find out by calling the restaurant & asking the price of the items you ordered & what the total should be. If there’s a difference, go there & speak with the manager – I’ve always found them very accommodating, & if your waiter is there he/she may remember you. If they made a mistake they may compensate you with a free meal. It’s worth a try.
Good luck!

No! No! No!
Go back to the Corner View wearing a body billboard depicting the photos from this blog entry and the inscription, “I got ripped off at the Corner View!”
Along with the personal satisfaction, you will get at most only a few days in jail.

I don’t have my receipt anymore. And I did take a look at the prices on that online menu. But that could be out of date. So, this is just a lesson for next time to double check. If they did overcharge us, at least the money went someplace that we like.
