Food review: Louisa’s Place

A few weeks back, I stopped into Louisa’s Place, a restaurant in downtown San Luis Obispo. Like with my previous food review, I was placing an order to go. I took a seat at the restaurant’s lunch counter:

I had looked at a menu outside, and I knew what I wanted to get. I placed my order with the cashier, and after a short wait received my food. The cashier said she couldn’t find any bags, so I wound up cradling this collection of containers out the door:

I had ordered enough food for both Jen and me, and we dug into it while watching TV at home. I ordered a Belgian waffle with bananas and whipped cream:

Along with a side of scrambled eggs and sausage:

Jen had an order of French toast:

With a side of scrambled eggs and bacon:

I was concerned that the waffle might not travel. I really expected to find a soggy pile of waffley goo inside my container when I opened it. But things held up pretty well. I cut into it easily with plasticware, and it still tasted very fresh. Overall, this dish was more like a dessert masquerading as food. It was sweet and very tasty. The sausage was very good. I tend to prefer sausage links over patties, but these were cooked evenly all the way through so they weren’t crusty ’round the edges. The scrambled eggs were also good. Very consistent. No complaints there.

I didn’t try Jen’s French toast, but I know she enjoyed it. She barely touched her side of eggs n’ bacon, as the toast was enough to fill her up. I did try some of the bacon, though. It was crisp, and fairly standard as far as bacon goes.

This was only my second trip to Louisa’s but I’m definitely hooked on the place. It’s been a pleasant surprise to find a real “family” restaurant in the heart of SLO, a place that serves omelettes, burgers and Pepsi, instead of Tuscan-crusted pan-seered whatever. The only criticism I can levy against Louisa’s is that it’s kinda expensive. I know, I know. Everything in SLO is expensive. But, still. $3.50 for bananas and whipped cream and ANOTHER $3.50 for a side of sausage and eggs? That adds up. But even at these prices, you’re still likely to end up with a great meal.

Breakfast is about the cheapest meal to make at home, and it always surprises me how they can much they can charge for that stuff at a restaurant. But the food does look damn good. Just one question, why did you use the enclosed plasticware. I can only assume you ate somewhere else other than your house.

To just add on to my previous comment, it looks like you’re at home. But the question remains, don’t you have any real cutlery?

We used the plasticware ’cause it was there. Sure, we’ve got “real” cutlery at home (and we did at home). But what’s wrong with the plastic stuff? I know it’s bad for the environment. But it was gonna wind up in a landfill whether or not we used it. So, why not use it and save some dish washing later?

And it is kinda ridiculous what we paid for that meal. But it was worth it. We had omelettes from the same place today and they were GOOD.
