This was really cool. I enjoyed listening to your audio and looking through your photos. You should do another when you install the RAM.

    Thanks everyone, for your comments.

And I’ll probably make a video of the RAM upgrade, Andy. The process of opening a Mac Mini’s case is… interesting.

Yeah. I have saw videos and tutorials online. I have saw one tutorial use pipe cleaners and several others use putty knives. I think it’s so stupid that Apple made the case hard to open and add RAM to. But of course. Why not let the Genius bar guys do it so they can make more money.

A putty knife was used to crack the case on my G4 Mini. My sister was actually the one who did it. I was too scared to try. I’ll be a little more courageous this time around.

Did you get the new OS X Leopard with it?
    . . . very cool!

Unfortunately, Jackie, it didn’t come with Leopard. I’m going to try and get it through Apple’s Up-To-Date program. The Apple website doesn’t seem to like the serial number of the Mini when I check online, so I’m going to have to just send in the paperwork and see if they allow it.

Shawn, you MAKE them give you Leopard (or as Richard calls it, Leonard). Their online ads say that all new Macs now come with Leopard installed.
Go get ‘em — but be kind.

I hope you can get Leopard. I just hope they don’t pull “Oooh but you got it open box and it’s technically not new.” Good luck.

Cranking open the case does void the warranty of course - I’ve been tempted with mine. I bought new from Apple Regent Street London. I’m too late for a free/cheap Leopard upgrade, and I’m still in two minds, especially that the unit only has 1GB ram. I love my mac mini, best packages I’ve installed is NeoOffice, Transmission, Firefox, CyberDuck, iSquint, iBackup, and Gimp.

Is this the topend unit? Superdrive and the 120gb Hard Drive?

  • Shawno said:
    (On November 8th, 2007 at 1:01 pm)

Yeah, Rowley. I decided to go all the way and get the 2.0 ghz model, 120 GB hard drive, all that. And my RAM upgrade yesterday, so I will be doing that. Are you 100% certain it voids the warranty? Thought I read somewhere that it doesn’t. Regardless, I’m not too worried. I’ve never had to send in a Mac for service. I’ll have to take a look at some of your software suggestions. I already use Cyberduck and think it’s quite good.

Calvin: No, it didn’t come with Leopard. But, thanks to Apple’s Up-To-Date program, I was able to obtain a Leopard upgrade for $10.72. This is an open-box Mac Mini, and that’s probably why it was Leopard-free. I’m sure any brand new Mac Minis sold now come with Leopard.
