Fish, birds and the Kat

October 13th, 2007

On Friday afternoon, Jen and I headed downtown. Our planned first destination was Aquatic Adventures. We had to make a decent hike from the parking garage to the pet store, and we hadn’t been to the pet store before, so we weren’t entirely certain where it’s located. We ducked into a nearby antiques store and one of the shop’s employees was able to point us in the right direction.

We were pleasantly surprised to learn that Exotic Adventures is not just a fish/aquarium shop, but they also deal in birds. The following cage contains an unusual combination – parakeets and quails:

Aquatic Adventures also sells pond fish:

This parrot was described by a store clerk as “grumpy.” Of course, it couldn’t resist Jen’s natural Snow White vibe, and wanted to perch on her arm:

Once we were finished with the pet shop, we began to make our way to our next (and final) destination, the new Hep Kat Salon. The salon is near where we parked the car, so we were in for another hike. Once we got going, it started raining somewhat heavily. We didn’t have an umbrella so we walked a couple blocks at a time, taking breaks under awnings to keep from getting too wet. I took this short video while standing on the covered deck of Higuera Street Cafe:

We did eventually get to Hep Kat. Jen made arrangements with salon staff to get her hair done and I… waited. It took a couple hours for her to get her hair done, and since it was raining (and I was already soaked), I didn’t feel like walking around town. I listened to some podcasts I had loaded onto my phone, and I also took this photo from right in front of the salon:

I took the photo because the sky is gray and at the time, the tree across the street looked really cool. I also found Hep Kat’s front door sign to be amusing:

When Jen’s hair job was finished, we left downtown for home. Here’s a photo of Jen and the new haircut:

It’s the first time in all of the time we’ve been together that she’s changed her hair. I think it looks really good. But, I’m probably biased.

Adorable! But then she always is!

  2. Andy Melton Says:

It does look great. Gives her a fresh new look. Those cars looked like they were going a whole lot faster than they should be on a rainy day, small street!

The video was taken with my phone, so it’s probably not a perfectly accurate representation of the speed of the vehicles. But, it rains so infrequently here that many of the locals forget how to drive when it does.
